A24 have acquired the rights to the next Texaco Chainsaw Massacre movie and are developing a TV show in the world too. The original movie remains, alongside The Exorcist, one of the high watermarks of Western cinematic horror and is especially beloved of the film community in and around Austin, Texas. The movie was filmed there, and the city has always held it close to its heart. Now, one of the city’s favourite sons is stepping up to help take custody of the franchise.
Glen Powell has been great in everything I’ve seen him in. He seethes wonderfully in The Running Man, does a great job as a former rodeo rider turned meteorologist turned storm chaser in Twisters and is superb in Hitman, as about eight people. The dude can do light and romantic, serious and heavy, funny, dark, you name it.
Now he’s one of a raft of executive producers on the new project and while its confirmed he won’t be in front of the camera it’s still an exciting move and bodes well for what’s coming. The director is locked in too and again, it’s good news. JT Mollner, who did a fantastic job adapting Stephen King/Richard Bachman’s The Long Walk last year is in the big chair for this one. Presumably he’ll direct the Pilot, although this a series that would lend itself to old school ‘Event’ TV miniseries, very well indeed. Mollner said: “[Director and co-writer] Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel created something bold, transgressive, and truly seminal that holds up even today as the gold standard for horror. When the opportunity for a long form exploration into this world arose, I saw it as a fresh way in, as well as a way to honour the existing folklore. I can’t imagine better partners for this approach than A24. This is truly an honour.”
So I’m guessing either a mini-series or a Welcome to Derry style eight episode run and both would be a great fit.
No word on the cast or crew for the new movie but it won’t be long before we know more.
