Monarch: Legacy of Monsters was enormous fun and every trailer for the second season has made Alasdair Stuart more excited for it. Here’s what he spotted in the last one.

0.08 – SCIENCE BOAT!

Oh hey look a funky science boat! I hope nothing bad happens to it in the next 20 seconds!

0.19 – ‘Something bigger’

Not only do we get a lovely shot of the docs with the new Titan approaching but we also get a very clever means of laying out the shop. The last couple of Monsterverse movies have been about intellect. Is Kong smarter than Godzilla? Can Mechagodzilla be engineered to beat them both? Is Skar King the world’s largest, angriest edge lord? This time round? It’s bigger and can hit harder than either of them. Brilliant. Sold.

0.22 – Poor Monarch dude

Pray for Science Boat, everyone.

0.23 – NOOOO! SCIENCE BOAT!

Is this the new titan though? It seems much more… tentacle-y than the other shots.

0.32 – Is this Skull Island?

I’m guessing this is Skull Island’s permanent storm. If so that puts back in the past before Kong is moved to the Hollow Earth, which tracks with what we’ve seen so far.

0.38 – Kurt!!

I know it’s been established from the jump that Kurt Russell’s back but I’m just really happy to see him. What’s interesting here is he seems to be witnessing the new Titan being released from prison. A prison that, in dialogue, Cate tells us she feels responsible for opening…

0.55 – Whale shot

No, I was mistaken. The new Titan is ALL tentacle near enough. I love this shot. Great way of establishing scale.

Also, the song we’re listening to is a movie trailer-ized version of I’ve Just Destroyed The World I’m Living In. The most well known version is by Ray Price and Willie Nelson but the Conway Twitty version is worth a listen too. And the lyrics, especially matched with Cate’s feelings of guilt and Kurt Russell’s continued living embodiment of modern cowboy sure do resonate don’t they?

1.02 – Face to face

This looks like it might be Cate coming face to enormous doom muzzle with the new guy. But in an underground location somewhere maybe?

1.09 – Russell Number Two!

As we see masses of Cloverfield-esque mega lice emerge from the ground, Cate explains the new Titan is a god the sea creatures worship and Wyatt Russell looks very, very worried. God I’ve missed this show.

1.12 – ‘Hundreds of thousands are in the path of this monster.’

So it’s come up before and Lee Shaw has fought it before…

1.14 – The New Guy

That is an enormous Titan. I love how weird it looks, with the body and tentacles almost seeming separate. Also this looks a lot like the dock from the Cate scene doesn’t it?

1.36 – ‘To destroy a monster, takes another monster.’

Looks like Lee’s reading from the Monarch ‘let them fight’ playbook. Fair play to him, it is a classic.

1.42 – ‘We need Kong… and Godzilla’

And there’s the big fella himself. Nice too to see that Monarch’s If In Doubt, Press Button and Summon Either Large Monkey Or Furious Lizard Cat is an established play at this point.

1.54 – Lee Shaw runs for his life

From something small and murderous and shot through with the same light as the new Titan it seems.

1.55 – Godzilla?

That looks a lot like fighter jets strafing Godzilla. The Big G goes by very fast but it definitely has their build.

2.01 – Science Jet!

Which lasts about as long as Science Boat! Interesting too that we see that attack wing of fighters and cut straight to this which is not the same aircraft.

2.15 – Kurt Russell boat races a Titan

I love this show. Kurt Russell, running for his life from the new Titan, in a very clear nod to Godzilla Minus One. Brilliant.

2.26 – Kong throws a punch

That’s how you end a trailer, with Kong punching another monster in the face!
