Back to the Powell Estate for the next adventure for Christopher Eccleston’s 9th Doctor and Billie Piper’s Rose – though they’re not the only ones out of place.
London is a city with a long and colourful history, which all comes crashing into the twenty-first century in Pandemonium by Katherine Armitage.
When the Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) and Rose (Billie Piper) return to the Powell Estate, they come face to face with figures from the city’s past, who have been brought forward in time and are having to share space with the residents of the 2000s.
From 17th-century diarist Samuel Pepys to World War II spy Violette Szabo, via a bunch of furious Celtic warriors, all of the capital’s history is on the loose. What malevolent force is behind this temporal chaos? And how will Jackie Tyler cope now Edith Nesbit has moved into her flat?
The past has broken through into the Powell Estate and not even the Doctor knows what’s happening! With more and more historical figures appearing, it’s a race to figure out what’s behind this, before the past becomes the present and all hell breaks loose…
The Ninth Doctor Adventures: Pandemonium features the return of Camille Coduri as fan-favourite mother Jackie Tyler, alongside Clive Hayward as local history enthusiast Glen, Kate Harbour as Edith Nesbit, and Nick Denning-Read as Paul/Samuel Pepys.
Producer and script editor Matt Fitton said: “After their little trip into the future in Cloud Eight, the Doctor and Rose are back to the Powell Estate – once again that mysterious elastic band bringing them back. They find the place in complete turmoil, with loads of historical figures running amok.
“Katherine Armitage is great at creating a really vivid story world, filling it with characters, and finding a high concept idea to spin off on. It’s really interesting to look at places around London, places where people live, and think about how much history there is there.”
Writer Katherine Armitage explained the idea behind her story: “I was thinking about the idea of history as this very highfalutin thing which belongs in books and dusty libraries. And actually, when you walk around London, one of the things I love is the blue plaques – there’s a nondescript little house, and someone amazing lived there for a while. These people are hiding everywhere.
“And so I had the idea of making them come to life, an estate being overrun by people of the past – but then, obviously, there’s got to be something sinister behind them! Pandemonium means where all the devils are…”
