Monarch, a split timeframe story about the past of the Monsterverse’s monster watchers and their terrifying present, is one of the excellent Apple TV shows that tends to get lost behind all the other excellent Apple TV shows. But no more! Because season 2 is imminent and here’s what Alasdair Stuart spotted in the trailer.

 

 

0.01 –He’s back!

Kurt Russell characters don’t die! They just regroup!

0.14 – Skull Island

And that looks like Lee and co heading to it based on the last trailer.

0.16 – Shockwave

What’s that shockwave waking Kong up? Some sort of psychic signal like we’ve seen the Titans experience before?

0.19 – The Early Years

That’s confirmation of more with the younger versions of the leads in future movies. Specifically that’s Anders Holm as the younger Bill Randa, played in the ‘present’ of Skull Island by John Goodman.

0.20 – Who’s this?!

That’s a fun beetle/ocotopi/warthog looking new Titan isn’t it?

0.23 – The Big Lad returns

And there’s our other large, furious sometimes hero! Welcome back!

0.28 – ‘This is something bigger’

There is nothing subtle about getting Kurt Russell to growl this over a hero shot of the new Titan being very large and very close. And that’s good! This is a fun, smart show where large monsters punch each other! Both! Both is good!

0.34 – ‘He opened the rift’

There’s a lot of, not especially great, stuff about the tribe who live in the Hollow Earth in Godzilla x Kong, and this (especially the monks in green robes which aren’t familiar to me), looks a lot like another run at that. Which honestly I value as there’s better work to be done there. Also super interested as to where the crashed helicopter we glimpse is because that looks a lot like where season 1 left off. Also those shock waves/storm look a lot like the ones we see around Kong don’t they?

0.52 – Wyatt Russell does not look happy

And much like his dad he’s always fun when he gets ‘Ah MAN’ moments like this.

0.52 – Skittering bugs

These look a lot like the surprising horrible little guys who almost killed the entire team last season don’t they?

0.56 – Godzilla Minus One Nod

This lovely shot, of a very small boat being chased down by something very large and angry on a very bright day, feels a lot like the first major sequence in Godzilla Minus One. If intentional that’s a lovely and very deserved salute to an incredible movie and a fellow traveller in the franchise.

1.15 – ‘Consequences’

The mayhem montage that follows is lovely but thos moment? With the whale being dwarfed by the new Titan? Again, beautiful.

 

Monarch season 1 is on Apple TV now. Season 2 arrives February 27th.
