We’re under a month out from Predator Badlands and the last trailer has just been released. You know the drill by now, but Alasdair Stuart’s spotted some interesting new stuff.

0.07 – Bike crash

Dek absolutely wipes out in a bike crash. I love how long this shot is held and I love how his journey across the world and movie seems to be about putting aside the tools he’s been taught to rely on and fending for himself.

0.25 – PISSED

Dek is FURIOUS. I’m really looking forward to spending a movie with an underdog Predator instead of the often sadistic and implacable badasses of previous entries.

0.29 – Banners top left

This is a small thing but… I’m not sure that’s the world Thia is on. The biome is different which is understandable, and common, but the banners in the top left corner suggest habitation. Maybe it’s the Predator world we glimpse in the sword fight.

0.32 – Tree tentacle creature

This loping tentacular nightmare looks like a fever dream octopus. I wonder if it’s evolved to swing at that height to avoid the tentacle we see Dek fighting elsewhere or if it owns those tentacles.

0.35 – Armoured mammoth

What a lovely, awful looking creature! I love the idea of its jaws basically being a helmet for its entire face.

0.40 – Barbed plant

This shot is going to cause a lot of trouble. Not so much the plants growing spines and exploding (notice the purple pollen on Thia in later scenes too I think) but the black, gooey external skin of the plant. I’m not saying this is connected to Prometheus’ black goo, and I honestly hope it isn’t. But it does look very similar…

0.48 – Trees

Dek booking it through the trees with Thia tied to his back. I’m looking forward to finding out how and why these two end up getting on.

0.49 – Predator swordfight someone in background

Predator on Predator swordfights punctuate the trailer and here we see an interesting one. Not just for the fight and the combatants but the figure trapped behind a door in the background…

1.13 – Other Side Of The Fight

We get confirmation here that the figure glimpsed in the back of the sword fight is Dek as he runs to a door and doesn’t quite make it. That confirms the reports of the fight being between his father and his older sibling, or at the very least heavily weights them in favour of being true,

1.20 – Second sister?

During filming there was a lot of discussion of Elle Fanning playing twin sisters and we glimpse the other one here. Also either that’s a hybrid squad of humans and synthetics or there’s a lot of different synthetics in that team because I count four different people.

1.23 – Power Loader arms

It goes by very quickly but the mech(?) fighting the beast here has power loader arms on its lower half. Nice touch.

1.34 – Bud

That’s Bud. When Bud showed up on the most recent poster there was a fair amount of conniptions at a Predator getting a cute sidekick. Given he appears to be a monkey the size of a teenager who we see pummelling a synth unconscious here, I’m not exactly getting Godzuki vibes from the little chap.

1.40 – Dust Storm Fight

I LOVE this. The idea of using particulate disruption to offset a Predator’s cloak makes perfect sense given the previous movies and the image of Dek using it to render his opponent (and dad?) visible is so striking. Plus it says a lot about where he ends up. He starts the trailer crashing and finishes it completely at home on the most dangerous planet in the galaxy.
