A sequel? Not quite. Alasdair Stuart looks at the latest Superman news.
For a while now, James Gunn has been talking about a script that he’s been working on which isn’t Superman 2 but which prominently features him. Late last week, Gunn, David Coronswet and Nicholas Hoult teamed up with artists Jim Lee, Jorge Jiminez and Mitch Gerads to announce the arrival of Man of Tomorrow in 2027.
All three images show Superman, recognisably the Coronswet incarnation, standing next to, fighting against or intriguingly side by side with Lex Luthor. Luthor is in the iconic green and purple power armour he’s often used in the comics. Most intriguing of all, in the Jim Lee image posted by James Gunn, Clark’s holding a screwdriver and leaning against Lex, smiling. Lex is flexing the fists of the suit and looks pleased.
What seems very likely is that they’re going to team up against a common enemy. Which’s even likelier judging by the Gerads image that Hoult posted, Lex is immediately going to try and start a fight.
There’s already rampant speculation about whether the other Superman family members will show up. Supergirl seems likely and with her, Krypto. Me? I’m pulling for Gary.
What a cool idea! What a great way to both announce the movie and spotlight the comics it draws from! Oh and one last intriguing nugget; Gunn has said that Peacemaker Season 2 will directly set up Man of Tomorrow…
Superman is still in theatres and available to buy and rent onstream. It’s GREAT. Go see it. Peacemaker Season 2 is running at the moment and is enormously good fun. Man of Tomorrow opens July 9th 2027.
