We got some interesting Daryl Dixon news at SDCC this week, As well as a trailer for season 3, it’s been confirmed season 4 has been commissioned and will be the end of the show. It’s also very, very heavily implied it’s not the end of the story so perhaps the long mooted crossover is imminent. Either way, here’s what Alasdair Stuart spotted in the season 3 trailer.

0.03 – London

London looks to have taken some serious hits. I’m very curious as to how 28 Days Later this sequence is going to get.

0.12 – ‘Last Englishman in England.’

And I’ve got to be honest with you, the idea that Stephen Merchant is the last Englishman in England chills me to the bone. I’ve never been a fan of Merchant, doubly so the shrill little controversy goblin he’s best known for standing next to. Plus given the times we live in, this line is ripe for the very worst kind of misinterpretation. That being said there are moments later on which suggest he’s going to be pretty fun so what the Hell, welcome aboard Mr Merchant.

017 – Boat Out

That being said the idea of sailing the yacht out of the country is a very cool one.

0.26 – House of the Rising Sun

Oh hey! A Spanish edition of The House of the Rising Sun! Excellent choice!

0.34 – Barricaded Town

Interesting to see the town locked down like this, as well as the various other bits of civilisation we see.

0.44 – Skull Marauders

And now we know why the town is barricaded, because of these skull helmeted chaps.

0.47 – Fascism

I know very little about the Francoist era of Spanish fascism, but the little I do leads me to believe that’s what we’re getting here. In many ways it’s the same situation the characters faced in France; terrified people, desperate for safety and unity and unknowingly sacrificing both.

1.01 – ‘I just think we should back off.’

Daryl has been through so much for so long that I’m amazed he hasn’t broken before. But here he is. Not running, not losing it, just, for once, not wanting to get involved with someone else’s problem.

1.08 – ‘You got a map?’

But this is who Daryl really is. Exhausted, grieving, sad and entirely unable to not do the right thing. Bless him.

1.11 – Back on the bike

Daryl and bikes. It just feels right.

1.13 – Army of the dead

THAT’S THE GOOD STUFF. An army of shackled walkers, pulling a train, brilliant.

1.25 – Exploding Walkers

Oh this is nasty! And fun! AND NASTY! An exploded box car of Walkers who emerge  on fire! But who’s transporting them? And why?

1.30 – Blinded

This gentleman is blinded, not blind. I wonder who did it?

1.31 – Bikers

It’s a subtle beat but it’s interesting they have fuel. Given the villain we glimpse here, I wonder if these guys, regardless of their clothes, are intended to be the troops of the  ‘King’?

1.32 – Train Fight!

If you have a train, you need to have a fight on a train. That’s just the rule.

1.34 – Rotary machine gun

The rotary machine gun being used here feels like a specific call back to the Django Spaghetti western movies. They were filmed in Italy, but the usage of such deliberately low tech weapons evokes them nicely.

1.36 – Disease

It’s a brief moment but it looks a lot like one of the people in this shot is covered in blisters. Has there been an outbreak of some kind?

1.37 – ‘We’re gonna kill the next king of Spain.’

And he’s back. Daryl Dixon, doing the impossible, one sentence at a time.

1.40 – Carol gets a boyfriend!

Hurray! Hopefully he won’t die!

1.42 – Walker Puppet Show

It’s a blink and you miss it moment but this certainly looks like a puppet show where the puppets are Walkers. Which is horrific and surprising we’ve not seen before.

1.42 – ‘First you survive what happened to you and then after time if you’re lucky, start living again.’

Having Carol say this is a very powerful, and specific, choice. Carol and Daryl are arguably the two members of the cast who have been through the most. The difference being Carol’s actually talked about it and done the work where Daryl has usually stoic’ed his way through things. That looks to be changing this season.

1.43 – Motorbike Gun Joust

And a helpful little dose of ‘Oh HELL YES’ to close out the trailer.’

Daryl Dixon season 3 begins Sunday 7th September
