American composer Mark Snow, best known for his theme for Chris Carter’s series The X-Files, has died aged 78.

Snow composed the scores for all the X-Files episodes, as well as the two feature films, as well as Carter’s Millennium, The Lone Gunmen and Harsh Realm. His other genre credits include Gemini Man, the first six seasons of Smallville, Ghost Whisperer, the 21st century incarnation of The Twilight Zone, Project ALF and the Michael Caine-starring 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea miniseries. His other movie work included the Fox Marvel film The New Mutants.
