Sci-Fi Bulletin: Exploring the Universes of SF, Fantasy, Horror and Spy-fi!

We’ve got one more trailer for Fantastic Four and it’s full of big science, big feelings and family. Here’s what Alasdair Stuart spotted.

Ben’s Zen

Just a quick note to say how much I love the gag we see here of Ben refusing to yell ‘IT’S CLOBBERIN’ TIME!’. It’s, of course, going to pay off but it really ties into how calm and gentle Ebon Moss-Bachrach is playing him,

0.47 – ‘I herald his beginning. I herald your end.’

That’s a hell of a line and Julia Garner, soon to be seen in Weapons, delivers it with the exact amount of alien grandeur and menace.

0.56 – Boots!

It’s a little thing but the boot on the Moon and the 4 on the sole pleases me.

0.57 – Big Science Thing

This feels a lot like the inside of Galactus’ vessel. The team in the spacesuits we’ve glimpsed before and the shots of what seems to be Galactus nearby all suggest they make initial contact and that contact goes very badly.

1.06 – New ship

Our first look inside the FF’s second rocket, which they seem to be using to flee Galactus.

1.09 – Galactus’ Ship

That’s a very strange looking ship the Four are fleeing from and it looks a lot like the Taa II or WorldShip, Galactus’ colossal favoured mode of transport.

1.12 – Haunted Reed

I love that the context we get for this scene seems to confirm that the team meet Galactus and lose, badly, hence Reed’s crisis of faith.

1.19 – Franklin confirmed

Lots of shots of Sue and a baby, seemingly confirming Franklin Richards’ presence in the movie.

1.46 – Paris and more big science things

IS that Paris?! It’s definitely the Eiffel Tower but the curve of the river looks very much like the Thames. Let’s Occam’s Razor this one and assume it’s Paris. Regardless, look at the colossal weird looking science buildings! And look at the massive mysterious piece of equipment powering up! And the other one on the horizon!

1.58 – Ben and Reed

The trailer’s full of little moments like this but this is the one that really hits for me. Reed’s enormous, and understandable, guilt at what’s happened to his friends is always sharpest with Ben. Seeing the big guy be so calm, and reassure him like this is really touching.

2.02 – Ben has a beard?!

Seriously, in this, and the later shots on the street Ben has a very prominent, and rocky, beard. Have they been somewhere else for a long time? Is this Ben and Johnny making a triumphant last minute save?

This has looked more fun with every trailer and I’m excited to see it. Roll on 25 July.
