The TV version of Foundation is one of  AppleTV’s arsenal of excellent SF shows and the first trailer for the third season has finally arrived. If you’re a book fan, and don’t like the changes that have been made, our guess is there isn’t much here for you. If you liked the show before? There’s a lot to unpack here as The Mule, and war, comes to the Foundation. Here’s what Alasdair Stuart spotted.

0.06 – Where is The Vault?

Is the Vault still on Terminus? If so the place has changed massively in the time jump between seasons. And what crashed nearby?

0.14 – War

That’s a very new type of ship and just the first we’ll see in this trailer. Also given the identical livery and design, and the troops on the ground, it’s interesting that they all seem to be at war a few scenes later. Is this the first example of The Mule’s powers at work?

0.24 – Agriwheels

Big farming agriwheels! I love when the show does massive technology!

0.33 – ‘I have talents, you see.’

The Mule looks fantastic with that red splash of colour and the jovial, gentle way of speaking. I’m really excited to find out more about him.

0.38 – Inside Brother Day’s mind

That Steadicam shot of Brother Day falling is a really interesting visual and, paired with this line, looks like we’re seeing inside his mind as The Mule works on him.

0.41 – Flotilla

That’s some serious space power. Four battleships where previous seasons have established one is enough to potentially kill a planet.

0.43 – Brother Day in Battle

Brother Day wearing seriously badass looking armour runs into battle. I wonder if this is a battle he loses, which leads to the prison scenes we see later.

0.58 – ‘Nothing hectic. Just a little… nudge.’

Pilou Asbæk looks terrifying as The Mule. I love the little flash of his eyes here. Also, you’ve seen Asbæk before, odds are, in Game of Thrones as Euron Greyjoy, Outside the Wire as Victor Koval, I.S.S as Alexy Pulov or most recently Salem’s Lot as Richard Straker.

1.10 – Speeder bikes!

Big weird speeder bikes! Love the design on these, especially what looks like the engine sphere up front.

1.31 – Day confronts Dusk

A quick moment of Day, apparently in prison, confronting Dusk who looks guilty as Hell.

1.33 – Demerzel and Gaal

Demerzel, the robot soldier turned Imperial nanny/major domo/power behind the throne attacks Gaal. She looks banged up too suggesting things get ugly between Foundation and Empire and these two in particular.

1.34 – Trantor can’t catch a break

We get a split second of it but that looks a lot like something terrible happening on Trantor. Again.

1.37 – Brother Day imprisoned

That prison is very unsettling. The weird tentacular hair of his warders and what seems to be bone and gristle as the primary building materials especially.

1.38 – Brother Day On Side

Brother Day seemingly going all in on Gaal being everyone’s only hope is massive. I wonder if this is the resolution that leads to the Foundation/Empire alliance.

1.40 – AIR BIKES!

Air surfing! This season looks action packed and I’m excited to find out how it all plays out.

1.41 – SCIENCE GUITAR!

I have no idea what the thing the bald individual is strumming is but it looks amazing!

1.50 – The Mule at The Vault

As the voice over says ‘Everything has been building to this.’ we see The Mule, at the Vault, and it opening. I love the pop of colour on his coat and how much trouble this looks like everyone is in.

Foundation Seasons 1 and 2 are on AppleTV now.

Season 3 arrives 11th July.
