Jurassic World Rebirth has just released a second trailer and it’s done a great job of laying out the movie’s stall. Here’s what Alasdair Stuart noticed. 0.4 – Screams and […]
0.4 – Screams and gunfire
Any time a trailer starts with screams, gunfire and something awful in red light you know you’re in for a good time!
0.35 – T-Rex vs raft
This whole sequence marks out the grammar for the trailer and, just maybe, the movie. We see multiple sequences here but we spend time inside all of them. There’s much less of a sense of this trailer being a series of exciting postcards. If the movie is the same way we’re in for something special. Also the methodical way the Rex just stalks them down is very cool and abjectly terrifying.
1.01 – Massive herd
I like big dinosaurs and I cannot lie. This massive herd of massive dinosaurs is instantly my favourite moment so far and I hope we spend a lot of time with them. Two other observations: their colouring is very unusual and I wonder whether they’re hybrids as is heavily implied elsewhere. And also those massive long whipping tails look hellaciously dangerous.
1.24 – Pterandon Questions
So firstly Scarlett Johannsson essentially kickboxing a Pteranodon is awesome and I’m very glad we’re getting to see it. Secondly, look at the decor inside the cave! The carved heads! The sense of this being an established structure! Was the island inhabited before InGen? Is this unusually tasteless InGen decor? I am made of questions!
1.28 – Previous Visitors
Between this, his recent Star Wars work and his memorable turn in the superb Companion, Rupert Friend is having a bit of a moment and it’s really nice to see. This sequence sees his character discover they aren’t the first people to visit the island and the more you look the more interesting it becomes. We’ve got what may be an enormous footprint right behind him. He’s got a hip flask suggesting the stresses of this intensely stressful job are getting to him. There is a decomposed hand clutching a pistol in the top right corner of the screen and yellow tips on what’s either a helicopter blade or a propellor. It looks for all the world like a military chopper, especially as the pistol seems to be a Glock 17 or something similar due to its distinctively blocky shape. So who owned the chopper? When did it go down? Did anyone come looking?
1.30 – ‘Survival is a long shot.’ ‘That’s kind of our specialty.’
I am 100% here for a group of super competent misfit toys versus a group of super competent hybrid dinosaurs and it’s really fun to see Johansson land a role like this.
1.36 – Baby dino
The baby dinosaur is adorable and I will not be taking questions. Plus her presence seems to echo the excellent work Camp Cretaceous has done with baby dinosaurs and humans interacting.
1.39 – The Big Bad
They’re playing the main monstrous dinosaur hybrid very close to their chest and I love how they’re doing it. The T-Rex jaw line here, the hand (?!) in the opening scene. It’s being treated very differently to the ‘villain’ dinosaurs in previous movies and I’m looking forward to finding out more and why.
1.55 – Hybrids?!
We’ve had a couple of shots of unusual looking dinosaur corpses and the brief hints of something very, very wrong about the dinosaur we glimpse throughout the trailer. Then we get this guy. What the hell is this?! It almost looks like a winged raptor. It’s got the body mass of a land dinosaur and it seems to be built and filmed like it shouldn’t fly but it has wings. It looks horrific! I LOVE IT.
2.15 – Eyes
The entire Mosasaurus fight looks great but this is a hell of a shot to finish it on. Welcome to Jurassic Park’s broken toys closet. The inhabitants HATE you.
Jurassic World Rebirth is out on 2nd July 2025
The first six Jurassic Park movies are all on Blu-ray/4K now. Camp Cretaceous, the genuinely brilliant animated spin-off, is on Netflix.
