Predator: Killer of Killers is within sight and we’ve got another trailer for the new animated anthology. Alasdair Stuart gets ready for historical murder sports! 0.09 – Shield Maiden This […]
0.09 – Shield Maiden
This Shield Maiden figure, who immediately does some serious Viking brutality and her love for her son and determination anchors the whole trailer. Her ethos, and her willingness to fight, echo down the years and I almost wonder if at least two of our protagonists are related in some way.
0.19 – Arrow storm
At first this looked like a Viking funeral. But look closer and I think this is the fleet the Shield Maiden and her child are part of invading another town . That town then defends itself. If that’s the case that’s an interesting set up with the leads in danger from multiple sides and the Predator hunting on an active battlefield.
0.33 – Cut from kids to adults
This cut from the two boys fighting to the same fight as adults is so subtle and so nicely done.
0.38 – Slouched Predator
We don’t get very much of the Predators, but this shot of the Samurai era Predator is really interesting. Look at their build, how slouched and loose they are. Compare that to the furious cybernetic tank of the WW2 story and you get an idea of the different ways they fight. Also judging by the art this Predator may be blind. Their mask has no eyes…
0.47 – Spine of death
There’s such creatively nasty weapons in Killer of Killers. This spine-like weapon especially evokes a couple of Earth martial arts but is also weird and alien and Huge. Love it.
0.50 – Massive cybernetics, no dreads
The Plane Predator fascinates me. Massive amounts of cybernetics and no dreads. Are they plugged into their ship? Are they so badly wounded by previous hunts this is the only way they can still hunt? I can’t wait to find out.
0.52 – Plane harpoon
I love this so much! It’s ridiculous and horrible!
1.07 – ‘You are ready now.’
I love that this line is spoken by the Shield Maiden but heard over the Pilot. Speaks to the horrific common ground the stories share.
1.12 – Shield Maiden underwater
I’m really curious as to who’s still standing at the end of the Viking story. The Predator is shown chained to the seabed here, and seemingly holding the Shield Maiden under the surface to drown with him. But she looks to be in other, later scenes too which is interesting.
1.16 – Pilot out of plane
I’m most excited for the World War 2 era story and this section, with the Pilot hero literally hanging out of the cockpit in mid air, looks incredible.
1.26 – Viking Predator Force Weapon
You get the best view of it here, but the Viking Predator uses what seems to be a force field weapon a few times. It’s an interesting idea and perhaps speaks to a very definite power imbalance in this hunt. We’ve seen Predators use guns, but only in time periods where humans already had them. So if that’s the case, is this one cheating?
1.36 – Blood and Smoke
The Samurai Predator is the one we see the least of, which given the hero of that story is a Ninja makes sense. This entire sequence, with the cloaked Predator chasing the ninja across a roof and being outlined in a smoke bomb, looks beautiful.
1.43 – Anchor Attack
Shield Maiden from the top rope with the anchor! The Viking section looks brutal and this hit is especially gnarly.
1.49 – And the winner is…
Predator stories only end two ways and this is always the most interesting one. An elder Predator (WITH A CAPE MADE OF SPINES?!) shows up to reward what seems to be the Pilot. Regardless, it’s a gorgeous visual and a great signoff for the trailer.
Predator: Killer of Killers is released on streaming on 5th June. It’s on Hulu in the US and on Disney + outside it. If you haven’t seen Prey, the previous live-action Predator movie from this director do so, it’s brilliant.
