Eagly’s human sidekicks return! The first trailer for Peacemaker Season 2 is here! Alasdair Stuart takes a look.

0.04 – Adebayo!

The breakout start of the first season, Danielle Brooks, is back as Leota Adebayo! She and John Cena have delightful chemistry together and this moment of encouragement is honestly very sweet. Plus she should actually have stuff to do in this, unlike her role in Minecraft.

0.09 – Maxwell Lord

Sean Gunn! As Maxwell Lord! Maxwell is a very, very bad man with terrifying psychic abilities and a fascinating and negotiable series of morals. You’ve previously seen Sean Gunn in basically everything else his brother has directed, including two roles in the Guardians movies.

0.21 – Guy! Hawkgirl!

Confirmation we’re in the DCU! Isabella Merced and Nathan Fillion cameo as Hawkgirl and Guy Gardner, Green Lantern, haircut enthusiast and asshole. Rumour is they won’t be working with Max by the time Superman happens which may provide some context for…

0.4 – Oh Good. Mean Superhumans.

Gardner I expect this level of snippy from, because it’s all he does. But Hawkgirl is a fun, nuanced, interesting character and in isolation this moment feels like they have no idea how to write her. I’m hopeful we’ll get context for it.

0.48 – Vigilante! And Economos!

Freddie Stroma’s Vigilante was an adorable labrador puppy covered in someone else’s blood in the first season. He’s a delight, and I’m so happy to see him back. Steve Agee’s John Economos was a little harder to warm to, because as a personal thing I don’t like characters of size being used as the butt of jokes. But the dude has charm for days as we see when he sits down with Adebayo and…

0.55 – ‘You’re living! In the worst level! Of Grand Theft Auto!’

…drops this magnificently nerdy burn on her living arrangements. It really seems like they’re steering into the found family element this season, with the team realising the only people who know what they’ve been through and are capable of are each other. Which is sweet, and odds are squalid, it is Peacemaker after all.

1.02 – ‘A particularly severe form of toxic masculinity.’

Jennifer Holland’s return as Harcourt seems to involve her fighting a whole bunch of people. Harcourt’s an enormously fun character and this is a really fun turn for her to take. It also speaks to Chris’ development. The poster child for toxic masculinity has passed the mantle on. Which isn’t a good thing for the characters but is fun for us.

1.10 – Rick Flagg Senior

Frank Grillo makes his live action DC debut as Rick Flagg Sr, who is very interested in talking to Chris about how his son died. He’s previously played the role in Creature Commandos, the animated series which serves as the first step into this version of the DCU. Who knows, one day we may even see it outside the US.

1.32 – TIM!

Tim Meadows! One of my favourite comedians has been a big part of both versions of Mean Girls, PopStar: Never Stop Never Stopping and a ton of other work. He’s hilarious and starring here as Langston Fleury, an ARGUS agent with, as we see, some name issues.

1.51 – Michael Rooker?!

By itself, this is fun to see, as Rooker’s a long time friend and collaborator of Gunn. What makes it interesting is that Rooker’s been in Gunn’s flavour of the DCU before, as Savant in The Suicide Squad. He didn’t last very long but… that forehead marking could be something spiritual or… could be a head wound. Before we all get multiversally excited, Gunn has said before that elements of The Suicide Squad but not all of it are still canon. So we’ll see. But then…

2.04 – Peacemaker meets Peacemaker

The first season established that Chris’ dad used a pocket dimension to store his weapons and this moment looks like Chris returning to that space. But the second Chris? The implication this is his space? That feels very multiversal, and could speak to moving Peacemaker into the DCU. Whether or not it works, because the multiverse can be exhausting, is another story. But still, it should be fun to find out.
