The second trailer for Andor eschews the lovely (for Alasdair Stuart anyway) rock approach of the first for more traditional Star Wars stylings, and gives us even more to chew over. Here’s what he saw…

0.04 – Ghorman

The Ghorman massacre is a pivotal event in the war, where Imperial soldiers slaughtered thousands of innocent protestors. It’s been a pivotal event in the timeline for years and there’s some confusion about what actually happened, with the ‘Legends’ timeline seeing it start when future Moff Wilhuff Tarkin lands his ship on a crowd of protestors. Showrunner Tony Gilroy has both confirmed that the show will clear up the confusion about the event and has also said it will be told over five episodes. Given the show is releasing in three-episode ‘movie’ events, it’s going to cross over at least two of them.

0.11 – Brasso in trouble

My boy Brasso on the ground and apparently detained but not yet under arrest. This seems to be earlier on in the same story where Cassian steals a TIE fighter of some sort and attacks Imperial soldiers in the same corn fields we see here.

0.13 – Saw seeing the Star Destroyer

There’s a recurrent motif here of someone seeing an Imperial ship in the atmosphere. We see it for the first time here, with Saw Guerrera. It’s a nice visual callback too to Rogue One and a sense of those events starting to barrel towards us.

0.16 – Meanwhile in the Senate

This shot of Mon Mothma in the Senate is put together in a really specific way. We see the pods of people involved in the debate but at first glance, it looks like they’re the only people in the Senate. That adds to the desperate tone of Mon Mothma’s speech. But when you look again you see every other pod is inhabited. So this is a small group of people deciding the fate of the galaxy while everyone else is either too apathetic or too terrified to do anything. Given recent events this season seems ever timelier the more we see of it. Also, are we about to see Palpatine for the first time in the show?

0.17 – ‘It’s a different kind of mission.’

The way this is cut with the literal boots on the ground of Rebel soldiers is really smartly done.

0.19 – Boots Boots Boots Boots Movin’ Up And Down Again

Kipling’s classic poem Boots has been used to terrifying effect in the trailer for 28 Years Later but I can’t help but think of it here. Love the way the marching feet cut over and clash with the Imperial siren too.

0.23 – ‘If it goes up in flames.’ ‘It will burn very brightly’

That seems to be a pivotal conversation between Cassian and Luthen, and also the first expression of the difference between how they wage war. We know Cassian has done ‘terrible things’ as he admits to Jyn in Rogue One. This season it looks like we get to see them.

0.27 – Hangar Attack?

Notice the left wall as the stormtroopers run in. It’s covered in vapour. Is this damage? Or some sort of atmosphere lock? It also seems to be shot like the hangar we see Andor steal the TIE fighter from elsewhere.

0.30 – Ferrix escapees

The Ferrix escapees sit down for a meal. It’s all going so well…oh NO.

0.32 – Bix Sees The Ship

Our second Imperial ship in atmosphere as Bix watches the quiet life of the Ferrix escapees begin to break. It’s a small but significant note I think that this is a smaller ship than the Star Destroyer we see Saw staring down. Either they’re found through sheer bad luck or the Empire can’t spare anything above this as the cold war heat sup.

0.43 – K2?

A KX class swats an Imperial guard. This may well be K2 in his first appearance in the show.

0.46 – ‘It’s a weapon.’

Others have noted that Kleya, Luthen’s assistant, is never in the same shot as him in this trailer which seems significant. Here she seems to be giving someone (Cassian?) the information they need to piece together what the Death Star actually is.

0.49 – Prisoner Transfer

This is an interesting one. In the original timeline at least, the Wookies were a pivotal part of the prison crews that built the Death Star. The placement of this nighttime scene of a prisoner transfer, as well as the large (and adorable!) owl/Wookie-alike we see suggests we my be revisiting that.

0.53 – Dedra

They want us to think this is Dedra being force choked but like a lot of people I don’t buy it. This looks far more like someone having a panic attack and trying to claw their uniform off so they can breathe. Which, given we know Ghorman is coming, feels like we might be seeing Dedra witness the consequences of her actions in support of the Empire.

1.00 – ‘There’s a future here. For those who dare,’

They really seem to want us to think Syril will be changing sides this season. I could see him talking about the Empire here but doesn’t it seem more fitting for the Rebellion?

1.05 – Syril and the droids

That seems to be Syril Karn entering a room full of KX class security droids and some very worried looking civilians. It almost looks like a departure lounge. It’s shot to make it look like this is bad news for Syril which seems to add some weight to the idea he switches sides this season. Especially as, again, this looks to be on Ghorman…

Andor’s final season arrives in three episode arcs weekly starting April 22nd on Disney+
