The first trailer for Fantastic Four: First Steps is out and is an absolute joy. Alasdair Stuart took a look at it and here’s what caught his eye and when you can see it in the trailer.

0.07 – Other Quarters

What seems to be the Baxter Building, with the two prongs, is visible when Reed, Sue and their visitor first arrive. That’s a little unusual as, a lot of the time, the FF have lived in the Baxter Building.

0.14 – Avengers Tower?

Speaking of the Baxter, is it me or does this look a lot like Avengers Tower? I wonder if it’s on the same spot.

0.16 – H.E.R.B.I.E’s eyes

are tape reels! I love that!

0.20 – Ben rock sounds

Ben being a big, calm, gentle dude is lovely and while we know ‘IT’S CLOBBERIN’ TIME!’ is apparently in the movie I love that he’s the heart of the family here. Also that he’s so supportive of H.E.R.B.I.E.

0.41 – The Mercury 4

Those spacesuits are very reminiscent of the Mercury Project, America’s first crewed spaceflight program. The helmets especially are very Mercury-esque which makes sense given the 1960s style time period. In a nice moment of serendipity (or perhaps intent) the Mercury suit was also called the Navy Mark IV. Check it out here.

0.41 – Portable Life Support

Fun fact. Those briefcase–like items are a vital part of the astronaut’s breathing apparatus. In early missions, once the suit was pressurised, astronauts needed to carry their life support with them before switching over to life support in their ship.

0.42 – Marvel-1

Reed’s rocket, the Marvel-1, is being shot here in a way that’s very reminiscent of Apollo program-era news footage. Look at this example from wikicommons.

0.59 – ‘Ben has always been a rock.’

Perfect. Just a perfect description and a perfect line. I love how front and centre the family dynamic is throughout but this one really hits me.

1.20 – Malkovich

Polygon have an excellent article up about the possibilities for who John Malkovich is playing. The fact he’s in this single shot, and the coyness surrounding the role, suggests it’s a vital one and if so, Polygon make a good argument for it being… Nathaniel Richards. Reed’s dad. Who also happens to share a name with Kang, one version of whom was named after him in his honour. While I can hear your eyes rolling at yet more bloody multiverse stuff, this seems like a potentially fun way to tie in, and land, the Kang story without making it the entire movie.  Find the article here:

1.20 – Different Suit, Same Science, Younger Reed?

That is not the same space suit Reed has on at 41 seconds. Look at the lock points along the front of his chest. It’s possible it’s covered on the other suit and exposed here but there’s also the issue that he looks… younger. Quite a lot younger. There are rumours the big reveal will be the FF were originally from the core MCU and thrown sideways into this dimension. If that’s true, and I’m right, this looks like it might be from their initial arrival.

Fantastic Four: First Steps releases on 25th July this year.

You can find your local comic shop here: https://www.comicshoplocator.com/

And when you do you should pick up Whatever Happened to the Fantastic Four written by Ryan North with art by Iban Coello, Ivan Fiorello and Alex Ross. It’s the first volume in the ongoing current Fantastic Four series and it’s one of my all-time favourites.
