American director Roger Corman has died aged 98.

Hailed as a “giant of independent film making”, Corman contributed vastly to the genre, as well as giving early work to many of its stalwarts. According to his family’s statement, “He was generous, open-hearted and kind to all those who knew him. When asked how he would like to be remembered, he said, ‘I was a filmmaker, just that.’”

He will be remembered for his many Edgar Allan Poe adaptations, as well as movies such as the original Little Shop of Horrors.
