British actor Michael Jayston, who played the Valeyard opposite Colin Baker’s Doctor and James Bond for Radio 4, has died aged 88.

Jayston was a familiar face on British screens for many years, taking the lead role in the adaptation of Adam Hall’s Quiller spy novels, as well as playing Peter Guillam in the 1979 Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. His spy-fi work also included playing 007 in the 1990 adaptation of You Only Live Twice on Radio 4.

His genre work included UFO, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Highlander III and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, He reprised the role of the Valeyard for Big Finish Audio on multiple occasions.

  1. I first saw Michael in two utterly villainous roles for episodes of Brian Clemens’ Thriller anthology (one episode co-starring Helen Mirren) and he was certainly talented enough for the Valeyard. R.I.P., Michael.
