Coates played Lois in Superman vs the Mole Men for the cinema and was persuaded to sign up for the TV version; however she refused to return for the second year, and was replaced by Noel Neill. Coates returned to the Superman universe for the 90s series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman in which she played Lois’ mother.
Her other genre work included a 1955 episode of Science Fiction Theater, I Was a Teenage Frankenstein, and The Incredible Petrified World.
