The use of the familiar tropes is knowing, but it’s the rapport between La’an and Kirk (the excellent Paul Wesley) that absolutely zings.

Sci-Fi Bulletin: Exploring the Universes of SF, Fantasy, Horror and Spy-fi! 
As a reminder of how much Trekkers could specifically enjoy the time travel stories in Star Trek’s earlier eras, I certainly agree that this Strange New Worlds episode does it well and with the most impactful outcome that rivals The City On The Edge Of Forever.
