Animation supremo Jules Bass has died aged 87.

Although best known to US audiences for his Christmas animations, he achieved worldwide fame for his work with Arthur Rankin jr on projects such as Tolkien’s The Hobbit and the less well-known The Return of the King. In live action, Bass directed Boris Karloff’s Mad Monster Party?

His other animated series included King Kong, Thundercats and Tales of the Wizard of Oz.
