Nichelle Nichols, known to genre fans worldwide as the original Lieutenant Uhura on Star Trek, has died aged 89.
Her son posted the news on social media. Although her role in the original and animated series of Star Trek was her most famous, Nichols also lent her voice to animated series including Gargoyles, Batman and Futurama. Unlike her colleagues, she did not make fresh appearances in any of the sequel Star Trek series, although footage was used in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and very recently her voice was heard in Star Trek Prodigy.
In addition to her work as an actress, Nichols was a campaigner on behalf of NASA, celebrated in the documentary Woman in Motion
Nichols spoke with Nick Joy in 2003 and excerpts of that piece can be read here, as part of our celebration of Star Trek’s 50th birthday.

R.I.P., Nichelle, and thank you for creating Lt. Nyota Uhura. 💓
