Concept artist Colin Cantwell, whose designs appeared in multiple genre films including Star Wars, has died aged 90.
Cantwell’s first credited work was for special photographic effects for 2001: A Space Odyssey – he came up with the idea of the bone being thrown in the air and turning into a spaceship – and his work was seen in Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind (“technical dialogue”), Buck Rogers in the 25th Century and WarGames. However he was best known for his work on the original Star Wars movie for George Lucas, designing and creating the prototypes for the X-wing, TIE fighter, Star Destroyer and the Death Star.
