Evángelos Odysséas Papathanassíou, known professionally as Vangelis, has died aged 79.

Best known to genre fans for his music for, and inspired by Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, Vangelis also composed other genre-based pieces across his long career. These included two ballets – Frankenstein: Modern Prometheus and The Beauty and the Beast – as well as The Tempest. His music was used by Carl Sagan for Cosmos, and he composed a choral symphony, Mythodea, which was used for NASA’s Mars missions, as well as pieces for the arrival of the Philae lander on Comet 67P.
