This month’s new Torchwood tale is out today – and Alasdair Stuart has dived straight in with his review.
In the 1950s, a history-making rocket launch ends in disaster and Professor Lynne Sharman (Safiyya Ingar) is to blame – according to her boss, the condescending Sir Christopher Grey (Russell Bentley). To save her reputation and find the real cause, Lynne must travel into space herself, alongside Torchwood member Norton Folgate (Samuel Barnett) and pilot Freddie Talbot (Jacob Dudman).
This is a fantastic story that runs headlong at every big issue in the franchise and finds new things to say about all of them.

Producer and script editor James Goss said: “Torchwood in space! Norton Folgate goes on the hunt for a strange object in Earth’s orbit — is it keeping humanity imprisoned, or is it protecting us from other worlds? If you’re a fan of Britain’s attempts at the space race, then Lizbeth Myles has written the Torchwood for you.”
Actor Safiyya Ingar added: “I loved playing Lynne. I love a strong and determined professional who knows exactly what they’re doing, doesn’t take any nonsense from anyone and will do anything to prove they’re worthy of being there.”
Writer Lizbeth Myles agreed: “Lynne Sharman is named after the first British astronaut, Helen Sharman, who isn’t well-known enough. I wanted her to be very ambitious which is often perceived very negatively — it’s her greatest strength and weakness.”
