Respected American actor William Hurt has died aged 71.

In a wide and varied career Hurt appeared in numerous genre movies, including the 1998 Lost in Space and as General Thaddeus Ross in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His film debut was in Ken Russell’s Altered States and he also appeared in Alex Proyas’ Dark City, Spielberg’s AI and Shyamalan’s The Village. On TV, his work included the 2000 adaptation of Dune in which he played Leto Atreides, the 2004 Frankenstein, an episode of Nightmares & Dreamscapes and the Channel 4 version of Humans.
