Tributes have been paid to visual effects genius Douglas Trumbull, who died on 7 February aged 79.

The Silent Running and Brainstorm director was responsible for the effects on a vast number of the iconic SF movies of the 20th century, including Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Blade Runner (for each of which he was Oscar-nominated), as well as 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Andromeda Strain. He returned from retirement to work on The Tree of Life in 2011.
