British director and producer Michael Ferguson has died aged 84.

Although predominantly known for his work on EastEnders, Ferguson’s early career included work on Doctor Who. He was the assistant floor manager who waved the Dalek arm at the end of the first Dalek episode back in 1963. He went on to direct The War Machines with William Hartnell, The Seeds of Death with Patrick Troughton and The Ambassadors of Death and The Claws of Axos with Jon Pertwee. He also directed four episodes of Out of the Unknown.

He was a director on two key spy series – Quiller and The Sandbaggers, the latter of which he also produced.
