Jill Murphy, who created The Worst Witch series of books, has died aged 72.

“I feel beyond lucky to have had a mum like mine, and it’s impossible to summarise the ways her absence will be felt,” her son Charlie said in the official announcement. “She had a depth of character, a warmth and a life force like no other. I miss her so much already.”

Murphy came up with the idea of the Worst Witch, Mildred Hubble, when she was just 14, basing it on her own experiences of a strict convent school. The series of books was adapted multiple times, most recently by Eve and The Demon Headmaster’s Emma Reeves who paid tribute on Facebook:

“She was always incredibly generous – with her talent, her time, her energy. She was a remarkable human being who overcame the artificial limitations imposed by class and an unsympathetic educational system to produce work which reached the hearts of children and adults around the world.”
