Respected British television director Charles Beeson has died suddenly.

Beeson helmed episodes of numerous fantasy series on either side of the Atlantic, including five episodes of Stephen Volk’s Afterlife, episodes of Smallville, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, The Vampire Diaries, Alcatraz, Fringe, Revolution, The Whispers and Timeless. He also directed 14 episodes of Supernatural.

Prior to becoming a director, he worked his way up the ranks, acting as First AD on the BBC’s version of The Invisible Man in 1984.

Volk told Sci-Fi Bulletin, “Charles directed several episodes of my ITV paranormal series AFTERLIFE, including “The Rat Man” (S2) and the climactic “séance” episode of S1 which he directed with faultless ease. I will forever be indebted to this talented, sweet gentleman, and will treasure our memories of working together. In a world where directors have to be not just auteurs but visionary, Charles epitomised those talented, unsung directors who are happy to bring a writer’s work to life with a simple joy in craft and collaboration.”
