Classic spy thriller The 39 Steps is coming to Netflix – albeit in a rather different form than usual.

The John Buchan novel, which introduced Richard Hannay, has been filmed and adapted for TV, radio and stage on many previous occasions. Benedict Cumberbatch will play Hannay, with Mark L. Smith writing the six-part limited series, and Edward Berger directing.

According to Deadline, the new version will be a “provocative, action-packed conspiracy thriller series that updates the classic novel for relevance in contemporary times. An ordinary man, Richard Hannay, becomes an unwitting pawn in a vast, global conspiracy to reset the world order: 39 Steps that will change the world as we know it, with only Hannay standing in the way.”
