One of the central elements of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials is its attitude to organised religion – something downplayed in the movie but not so much in the TV adaptation:

Overall, it’s feeling a lot more friendly towards beginners than the first season, and a lot less coy about some of Pullman’s central anti-religious themes as well.
