Respected American science fiction author and editor Ben Bova has died aged 88.

Bova wrote over 100 books, edited key magazines and was president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. His first novel was published in 1959 and became editor of Analog from 1971 to 1977, gaining Hugo Awards for Best Editor during this period. He later edited Omni.

His most recent book, Neptune, is the second of his Outer Planets trilogy that began with Uranus and is set for release next year,
