Dave Prowse, the former bodybuilder whose acting roles included the original Darth Vader for the Star Wars films, has died aged 85.

Known in the UK for playing traffic safety “superhero” The Green Cross Code man, Prowse played many different genre roles, including Frankenstein’s Monster in the spoof Casino Royale, and two Hammer movies, The Horror of Frankenstein (1970) and Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell. He played the Minotaur in Doctor Who’s The Time Monster with Jon Pertwee, and also appeared in The Tomorrow People, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Space:1999 before donning the black suit of Darth Vader for the first three films.
