Writer Erin Horakova said: “This story explores the overlaps between science-fictional tech and the real-world tech that seems equally unreal to us. One of the many excellent things Doctor Who can do is show us unexpected things about the way our world is constructed, and make us ask questions about them.
“The central conceit also offered a way to play with the audio format of the story, making a virtue of necessity, and an irresistibly awful title pun.”
Producer Alfie Shaw said: “Erin’s story focuses on the interesting world of phreaking – phone-line hacking – which is something I knew nothing about. When people talk about hacking, we normally think of computers and the internet, not telephones. But, obviously, as it’s Doctor Who, the hackers aren’t the only problem that the Doctor and Liz have to deal with…”
Narrator Mark Reynolds added: “For the voice actor inspired (as a boy) by watching the great Jon Pertwee as the Doctor in the early 1970s, the chance to perform one of his adventures and say lines written for his character was a remarkable experience, and I feel lucky and proud to have become a part of the Who family on audio.”
