Star Trek composer Michael Giacchino has released his first non-film related album.

Variety says that it “combines science-fiction storytelling with lounge music and an overall theme that is unexpectedly relevant to our times.”

Travelogue, Volume 1,” credited to “Michael Giacchino and his Nouvelle Modernica Orchestra, is a 55 minute album, inspired by Giacchino’s love of old radio drama.  “I love the music of Arthur Lyman, Martin Denny and Les Baxter,” he told Variety. “And I loved Captain Kirk’s ship logs from the original ‘Star Trek.’ I took those and just mashed them all together into a concept album.”

The narration is written by Alison-Eve Hammersley, and performed by Janina Gavankar, as a traveller who is searching for a new home. Although our planet originally attracts her, eventually mankind’s behaviour repulses her.

“I just did it for myself,” Giacchino explained, “with the hope that the enthusiasm put into it will spread to the people who hear it. The thing about the old concept albums was, you’re supposed to listen to them from beginning to end. You get to sit back and remove yourself from the world for one hour. For me, it was about creating a little place where I could go amidst all the craziness that was happening.”
