The opening episode of Star Trek: Discovery has brought a new actor – or pair of them – into the spotlight, playing Grudge the cat, Book’s feline pal.

Discovery executive producer Michelle Paradise confirmed to TV Line that “Grudge is everyone’s favourite new character… Everyone, of course, wants to be on set on the days when we’re shooting the cat. Including me.”

Grudge is actually portrayed by two separate cats, a pair of Maine Coon brothers, Leeu and Durban. “Grudge is Book’s first lady love, and we will be seeing a fair amount of Grudge this season,” Paradise told TV Line. “We won’t overplay Grudge, but Grudge is an important part of Book’s life, and is with him on his ship. We will be seeing Grudge again.”
