Bafflegab’s new production of Children of the Stones has been released today by BBC Sounds.
This is a new adaptation by AK Benedict and Guy Adams of the cult 1977 television series – one of the most bizarre, atmospheric and creepy dramas ever broadcast. Comedian Stewart Lee called it ‘the scariest programme ever made for children,’ in a Radio 4 documentary he made about the series in 2012.
It stars Reece Shearsmith (Inside No 9), India Brown (Worzel Gummidge), Steve Oram (Sightseers), Ralph Ineson (The Witch), Jairaj Varsani (The Personal History of David Copperfield) and Taj Atwal (Stella), and is directed by Simon Barnard.
Children of the Stones is the story of Mia Brake (India Brown) and her archaeologist father Adam (Steve Oram), who move to Milbury, a village framed by a 4000-year-old stone circle.
But all is not right in Milbury. The villagers are eerily happy, greeting each other with the unnerving phrase “Happy Day!” At the village school most of the other children can solve incredibly complex mathematical problems. And the villagers all seem in thrall to astronomer and local celebrity Hendrick (Reece Shearsmith).
As one-by-one her friends join the Happy People, Mia must uncover the secret of the stones.
Reece Shearsmith says: “As a huge fan of the incredibly creepy original – it was a thrill to step in and preside over the running of Milbury over 40 years later. It is still a wonderful place full of very happy people. I hope everyone will tune in to the broadcast to find out for themselves. In fact it’s vital that they do. The plan depends on it. Happy Day!”
