Ron Cobb, best known for his design work on Ridley Scott’s Alien and Robert Zemeckis’ Back to the Future, has died aged 83.

His earliest work was on John Carpenter’s Dark Star and collaborated with Giger on Alien. He contributed to many of the key SF and fantasy films of the 70s and 80s, including creatures for the cantina scene in Star Wars, and weaponry for Conan the Barbarian, as well as designing the Nostromo, Doc Brown’s DeLorean and the Earth colony in Aliens. Other key films included The Last Starfighter, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and The Abyss and True Lies for James Cameron.
