It won’t just be Ruby Rose who departs Batwoman – so will her character.

Although plans were originally simply to recast – and, according to showrunner Caroline Dries, scripts had already been written – eventually the executive producers decided to rework the series completely.

Dries told Deadline, “I’m inventing a whole new character who in her past was inspired by Batwoman, so she will take on the mantle and is completely maybe not the right person at the time to be doing it, so that’s what makes it fun.” Casting notices suggest this is a character called Ryan Wilder. Dries added, “I just think it helps the audience a little bit too, that we are not asking them to not address the elephant in the room.”

Batwoman will re-enter production after COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. Some California-based shows are expected to return later this month.
