During the global rewatch of the first episode of the BBC’s Life on Mars, show creators Matthew Graham and Ashley Pharoah revealed some details of their planned final series.
“We would never make another Mars unless we really had something to say and could push the envelope all over again,” Graham explained. “Finally we have something.” The intention is to assemble as many of the cast from both series as they can (“think Avengers Assemble!” Graham noted), with returning characters potentially including DCI Litton and Jim Keats.
The iconic elements of the first two shows – Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes – will be present and correct. “Expect one Ford Cortina, one Audi Quattro and the Chinese wall of all cardboard boxes. It’ll be set partially in the 70’s, partially in the 80’s and mostly in an alternate NOW,” said Graham. It would be one series: “We are seeing it as 4 or 5 episodes and then done” and “will be set in Manchester and in London”. There’s also plans for a show within the show, Tyler: Murder Division.
“Remember,” Graham concluded. “There are bad things and there are monsters. These things are real. But to get to you they have to get through the Guv. And the Guv is putting his driving gloves on.”
