A new and intriguing web series is on the way – featuring actors who played four Doctor Who companions – and needs your help.
Gentrification was created by husband and wife acting-writing team Peter Rae & Helen Bang. After conceiving a number of TV pilots – all in the hands of a major production company – they decided to create something for immediate release and the comedy web series The Self-Tapers was born. In doing so they managed to persuade an unreasonably high number of guest stars to appear, including Lisa Bowerman, Olivia Poulet (The Thick of It), Richard Rycroft (Game of Thrones) and Stephen Billington (Hollyoaks, Armchair Detective). The series was well-received and convinced them to continue creating for the medium of the web series.
Their mutual love of David Lynch as well as the works of J.G. Ballard and the dystopia genre in particular meant that their next project was always destined to be a mystery-thriller. A short story idea based on the current state of the world – the paranoia and fear of immigration, what connects us and what divides us – was developed into a 25-part web series. Gentrification is that story. Episodes 1-13 make up season 1 and will be released shortly.
Xanthe & Krystos live a nice comfortable life, in a nice middle-class suburb. They have charming friends, a friendly dog and a big house. They are the ones who really seem to have it all. Then one day there is a knock at the door… The new neighbours seem friendly enough. Perhaps a little too friendly and they do rather have a tendency to show up places uninvited. What is special about the Greeks? And why are they so unnerved by the attention of the new arrivals, do they themselves have something to hide? Multiple psychics, dimension-traversing artists and cryptic commentators all add to the mystery in this dystopian thriller – begging the fundamental question – Who Are The Neighbours?
The series stars Billie Vee, Konstantinos Kavakiotis, Helen Bang, Peter Rae, Sophie Aldred, Lisa Bowerman, Beatrice Hyde, David Alwyn, Nina Bright, Rosalind Blessed, Chris Pybus, Meg McNaughton, Katy Manning, Michael Fenner, Dan Snelgrove, Maria Hildebrand, Nicola Bryant, Kristyna Rasova, Candida Gubbins & Robert Duncan.
The production is being funded on Indiegogo, and hopes to raise £8,000 over the next month. For full details of perks available – which include on screen and IMDB credits, as well as scripts and set visits – click here.
