The BBC’s head of drama Piers Wenger, has made clear that Doctor Who is far from being cancelled over the lower ratings this season.
Speaking in London on February 24, Wenger noted, “I worked on Doctor Who myself and produced it for many years and I can honestly say I don’t think it’s been in better health editorially. The production values have never been better. It’s also not just funded by the BBC, it’s funded by lots of international partners.
“It’s an incredibly important show for young audiences, it’s still watched by families in a world where there are fewer shows that have the power to do that. It will always be an important show for us and we’re a very long way from wanting to rest it.”
Doctor Who’s season finale airs this coming Sunday. Read our review of the penultimate episode here.

Well, he’s certainly free to feel that way… but that’s a rather silly statement. I mean, the show’s still enjoyable and all that, the production value and the editorial content used to be so much better before the current team came aboard. The alien makeup hasn’t been great, the Daleks and Cybermen both look like cosplays, and the writing has been hit-or-miss, with far more weak episodes than strong ones. From Tenant to Capaldi, the show was far more consistently well-written, and with much better visuals.
Given that he’s the man who authorises it, his opinion probably counts more than any of ours…
