Christopher Tolkien, who has been the guardian of his father JRR Tolkien’s legacy for decades, has died aged 95.

His passing was reported in his local paper, Var-Martin.

The third son of JRR Tolkien, Christopher devoted much of his life to editorial work on his father’s manuscripts after JRR’s death in 1973. The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales and The History of Middle-Earth all appeared over the next two decades. He also clarified the maps for the saga, and was the chairman of the Tolkien Estate until 2018.
