Star Trek’s Dorothy Fontana has died aged 80 after a brief illness.

Fontana was a writer and story editor on both the original Star Trek series in the 1960s as well as the animated incarnation in 1973-4. Her episodes included some of the key moments for Mr Spock, including Journey to Babel and Yesteryear. She also co-wrote the pilot for Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and the fan-produced Star Trek: New Voyages.

She worked on many other genre shows, including Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, Babylon 5, Land of the Lost and The Six Million Dollar Man, and penned Star Trek novels such as Vulcan’s Glory, as well as the novelisation of Gene Roddenberry’s The Questor Tapes.
