Donald Moffat, the British actor who starred in John Carpenter’s The Thing and the TV version of Logan’s Run, has died just short of his 88th birthday.
Born in Devon, his first work was at the Old Vic but he soon moved to the United States where he received acclaim for his stage performances. His film work also included The Terminal Man, based on the novel by Michael Crichton; Popeye; and The Right Stuff, as President Lyndon B Johnson. SFB readers of a certain age will associate him most with the android Rem in the short lived Logan’s Run series.
I remember him as the president trying to get Dr Jack Ryan (Harrison Ford) take the fall for his misguided dealings with the Columbian drug cartels in “Clear and Present Danger”. The end scene is memorable:
President (Moffat) – How dare you bark at me like a junk yard dog, I am the president of the United States
Dr Jack Ryan (Ford) – How dare you Sir!
Great character actor.
