American writer John D.F. Black, who was writer, story editor, executive story consultant and associate producer on the first season of the original Star Trek series, has died, age 85.
Black’s sole credited teleplay for Star Trek was The Naked Time, a key story in the development of Leonard Nimoy’s Spock (and the basis for the Next Generation story The Naked Now, for which he received screen recognition). He also wrote the Wesley Crusher-centric Justice for TNG’s first season, under the penname Ralph Wills.
His writing career stretched back to 1957 with the screenplay for The Unearthly (as Geoffrey Dennis), and he contributed to multiple series in the 1960s and 1970s, including Mission: Impossible, Wonder Woman, The Man from Atlantis and the TV movie The Clone Master.
