Sci-Fi Bulletin: Exploring the Universes of SF, Fantasy, Horror and Spy-fi!

Doctor Who producer Derrick Sherwin, who created UNIT (the United Nations – later Unified –  Intelligence Taskforce), has died aged 82.

Reeltime TV producer Keith Barnfather announced the news on Facebook, stating that Sherwin had been ill for some time.

In addition to producing the show during the changeover from the Troughton to Pertwee eras, Sherwin was also its script editor for a good part of Patrick Troughton’s run and scripted The Invasion, the story that saw the Cybermen invade London to face off against UNIT, and also introduced the character of Benton. He appeared briefly in a scene in Spearhead from Space and after leaving Doctor Who was responsible for the Paul Temple TV series.
