Despite many predictions of around the 6 million mark for an overnight viewing figure, Jodie Whittaker’s debut as the Doctor was watched by 8.2 million people, rising to 8.5 at its peak.

Critics have been positive about the soft reboot of the show, with much praise going to Whittaker and her colleagues’ performance – although some queries have been raised regarding the suitability for a family audience of the alien creature’s costume.
