The District 9 director will be working from Justin Rhodes’ rewrite of Neumeier and Miner’s original sequel script, which came about, Neumeier told Deadline, when MGM President Jon Glickman recalled that the original Robocop predicted a reality TV star as president.
Blomkamp told Deadline, “What draws me now is someone searching for their lost identity, taken away at the hands of people who are benefiting from it, and seeing his memory jogged by events. That is most captivating. The other thing I am excited by is the chance to work again with Justin Rhodes. He has added elements that are pretty awesome, to a sequel that was set in the world of Verhoeven. This is a movie I would love to watch.” (For more details, click here.)
The world of Robocop has been massively expanded since the first film, with two direct sequels, two animated TV series, and two live-action shows, as well as a reboot in 2014.
