British writer Trevor Preston, who created cult ITV series Ace of Wands, has died aged 79.

Although best known for his TV crime shows such as Out and Fox, Preston wrote for spy series Callan. His genre credits include the first television version of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe in 1967 (only a few portions of which survive), The Incredible Adventures of Professor Branestawm and James and the Giant Peach. He also penned Billy the Kid and the Green Baize Vampire – a vampire snooker musical!

Ace of Wands, which Preston himself called a children’s crime drama, ran for three series from 1970 to 1972 and focused on the adventures of stage magician Tarot who also had supernatural powers.
